THE UK’S MOST BEAUTIFUL TRIATHLON

British Middle Distance Championships

Date: 09.07.23               Location: Holkham Hall, Norfolk               Distances: 1.2m Swim, 56m Bike, 13.1m Run

Swim: Single lap lake swim
Bike: Mostly fast and flat

The Outlaw Half Holkham Weekend is about as close to a triathlon festival as we think you can get. Set in the vast, stunning grounds of the historic Holkham Estate, there is onsite camping, a range of local food outlets, events for all the family and the weather rarely disappoints!

Holkham Hall provides an inspiring backdrop to the swim, both transitions and the run course, while the single loop bike course takes participants on an unforgettable journey through some of the most beautiful countryside and coastal roads Norfolk has to offer.

The bike course as a few short climbs, including out of the first transition, but it’s mostly flat with plenty of opportunity to pick up speed! The run course is challenging for heavy legs, but the beauty of the landscape and the crowd support will carry you to the Outlaw Half finishing line in front of the 18th century Hall.

This is truly a weekend to remember for participants and spectators. It’s no surprise Outlaw Half Holkham has won awards and regularly features in listings of the UK’s best triathlons.

Event Day Infomation

No, not for this race. Your race equipment must be stored by your bike. Additional kit will either be held in a bag storage area or next to your bike depending on the latest race regulations or you can leave it with your supporters.

You can carry mobile phone, but it must not be used in any distractive manner during the race. You must not play music on it or use it to take photos or recordings during the event. Headphones, of any kind, are not allowed under BTF rules.

What are the common mistakes made by competitors?

Failing to read the Race Information is the biggest issue we come across. Many athletes could reduce their stress and errors by taking the time to read the Race Information fully. Even if you have done the race before, there may be changes to how it is being run this year. Please read your Race Information carefully when you get it so you know how everything will work. We also offer athletes the chance to join in a Q&A with the Race Director.

Other issues athletes encounter include:
· Not bringing photo ID to collect their Race Pack.
· Not making plans to rack their bike on Saturday and thinking you can do it on Race day (you can’t).
· Not knowing where their stuff is in transition. Make sure to visualise your run out of the water and how to locate your bike, same again for T2.
· Not arriving early enough. Remember there is a lot to do before a race, there will be queues for toilets and it may be some distance to the swim start.

When should I eat on the morning of the race?

Everyone should have developed (and practiced!) their own strategy during training, but most competitors have their breakfast around two to three hours before the start and then drink to ensure they are hydrated. You may find it helpful to eat something small or take a gel or two 15-30mins before your race start.

What nutrition do you have on the course?

High 5 is our on-course nutrition partner.

At the Bike Feed Station there will be High5 Energy Source or Water and High 5 Energy gels available.

Feeds stations on the Run course will have a selection from High5 Energy Drink, High5 Zero , flat cola, water, High5 IsoGels and High5 IsoGels Caffeine (mixed flavour) and bananas.

Where should I start on the swim?

You will be allocated a swim start time based on the information you provide – the start will be a time trial format where you start in pairs or smaller wave groups, this will be confirmed in your Race Information. Please ensure that you arrive to the swim start at the allocated time.

You do not have to dive in races where a diving start is allowed – you will be able to jump or slide into the water if you prefer. If you are a nervous swimmer or find that you are being overtaken, you may find it better to position yourself to the side of the main racing line.

How many feed stations are there & where are there?

Details of feed station locations will be communicated nearer the time however we aim to provide regular and frequent opportunities for our athletes on the bike and the run.

How do competitors get a penalty or DQ in the race?

You can only receive a penalty or disqualification from a BTF Official. To avoid being disqualified or penalised, ensure you are familiar with the BTF rules and follow them at all times e.g.
· Do not cross the centre line of the road (ride on the correct side at all times), especially when cornering.
· Do not urinate in public, there are plenty of toilets at all feed stations on the course and in transition.
· Don’t ride dangerously, please ensure that you adhere to the Highway Code.
· Don’t behave in a rude or aggressive manner.
· Don’t draft – ensure you keep your distance from other riders. Once you pass someone it is their responsibility to drop back. There are motorbike referees on the course.
· Do not drop litter!

Spectators

What can family do while I am racing?

Holkham Hall is a major attraction in the area and has lots of things to do. You can walk around the venue, spotting lots of wildlife and watching the deer. There are four cafes, bike hire and a children’s playground. The beach is a couple of miles walk from the transition area.

On race day, there is a great atmosphere at the venue and spectators get to see you multiple times during the run as well as cheer the other competitors, there will also be the event expo and food outlets to visit.

Is there WiFi at the venue?

There is wifi available in various locations however general phone signal on site can be patchy. We would recommend visiting the café & getting online at the same time.

Is there any live tracking?

Yes, we will have an athlete tracker. The link to the tracker will be available from our website in the immediate lead up to the race. We also have various live social media updates. Please note that this is not precise tracking but an average pace based on your time recorded at fixed points on the course.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes, dogs are welcome on the race site but they must stay on a lead.

Charity

tri for life was set up in 2007 as a registered charity with one simple aim – use the sport of triathlon to raise money for some fantastic causes. Since the first event at Dorney Lake, Eton with just 200 participants, through to hosting thousands more at Woburn Abbey, it has grown to be one of the UK’s largest triathlons. Over one million pounds has been raised for many charities including Great Ormond Street Hospital, Teenage Cancer Trust, Whizz Kidz, Breakthrough Breast Cancer and Rays of Sunshine. The Woburn Abbey triathlon has now become part of the Outlaw Series and tri for life is delighted to become the headline charity partner across all Outlaw events allowing it to continue to support many more charities over the years to come.

In 2023 tri for life will be supporting Alzheimer’s Research UK & Cancer Research UK. Find out more about these charities and sign up for a charity place below:

To fundraise for Tri For Life the registration fee is:

Cancer Research UK

We’re the only ones fighting over 200 cancers, including the 1 that matters most to you. Our life-saving work is funded entirely by the generosity of our supporters, so every step we make towards beating cancer relies on every pound, and every runner.

Thanks to our amazing supporters, survival rates across all forms of cancer have doubled in the last 40 years, but we can’t stop there. Our ambition is to accelerate progress and see three quarters of patients surviving cancer within the next 20 years.
