Debut Outlaw Half Bowood a Success
Outlaw Half Bowood finally got to enjoy its debut at Bowood Estate in Wiltshire on Sunday 12 September. Covid delay behind us, the launch event featured sunshine, stunning scenery and eye-catching performances across all age groups.
Fog pushed back the start by half an hour but the sun burned through and lit up the beautiful lake and parkland ready for nearly 1300 athletes to dive into a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile hilly bike ride and 13.1 mile run. Less than four hours later, Harry Palmer crossed the finishing line outside Bowood House.
Palmer used local knowledge and family support to take the overall win over Donald Brooks. He had a two-minute lead at the start of the run and extended it over the Devon based athlete, who in his forties, seems to keep getting faster and pushing for the top spot. Tenby based Oliver Simon finished third.
It was third time lucky for Rebecca Duxbury. In her third Outlaw Triathlon Series event, she moved up from second at the Outlaw Triathlon (the full) to first in Bowood. Her winning margin was fifteen minutes, underlining just how well she performed.
Emma Cowper was second, returning impressively to the sport after having had a baby. She has another shot at the top spot at Outlaw X in less than two weeks’ time. Swansea’s Hannah Munday was third, mostly thanks to an incredible swim that ranked her up with the very fastest male athletes.
There was close racing in the Relay event, and the win went to a local trio from Swindon Triathlon Club.
Stephen Walton and Margaret Sills took first places in the most senior age category, 70-74. At almost 73, Walton’s fast time of 6:33:37 hopefully provides inspiration to many.
